CounsellingCounselling refers to a process that facilitates problem solving. The first phase consists of identifying potential problems and goals. In the second phase, strategies and techniques are presented that aid an individual in attaining his or her goals. What is the difference between counselling and therapy?Therapy is about problem solving, too. The main difference is semantic only: if one speaks of therapy, we assume that the level of functioning of a person - in his or her daily life - is below normal, whereas a person that receives counselling is not impaired in his or her daily life. An important difference concerns funding: therapy, in general, is paid for by the health insurance companies in Germany - counselling is not. A related issue is that the providers of psychotherapy - therapists - have usually received more training than professionals who are only qualified for counselling. "Counsellor", incidentally, is not a legally protected term in Germany, in contrast to "Psychotherapist". What is counselling useful for?Possible reasons for counselling include |
